A short (two nights) trip to suburban DC

I am a bit behind, well a lot behind, but due to the hurricane I have canceled my remaining trips this year so I should be able to catch up.  This was a two evening stay in Maryland, for a scientific meeting.  It was in September.  I took the shuttle down to DC on a Wednesday evening and the train back Friday afternoon.  This is more of my attempt at minimalism, everything in an LL Bean backpack.  It worked well.   A bit full but I can get the packing cube in the bottom compartment of the backpack which really makes the rest less cluttered.

Trip to Cambridge, UK

This was originally going to be a much longer trip, up to as many as six days.  However, at both ends of the trip things came up so it turned into leaving Thursday early evening for Heathrow, arriving Friday morning and heading to Cambridge.  Then back to Heathrow Saturday afternoon and home to JFK Saturday night.  Since I had packed for the longer trip I didn't completely repack to another bag and which resulted in using a larger rolling bag than I would have typically used for a two day trip.  Gorgeous weather in Cambridge while I was there.  Also, since I was doing a presentation and thought I might modify it while there and also had some documents I wanted to edit while tracking changes I took a notebook computer in addition to an iPad.

Two day trip to Alexandria Virginia July 30, 2012

This is my packing list for a two day trip to attend a meeting in Alexandria Virginia.  Currently on the trip.  I left in the afternoon of Monday July 30 and am returning on the evening of Wednesday August 1.  Decided not to take a raincoat based on the weather reports.  I took the Acela both ways from NY to Union Station in DC.  Decided that due to steps in Penn Station in NY and being able to pack fairly light that I would try not going with a rolling bag.  At least on the way down it worked out great.

I weighed both bags prior to leaving and one was 13.9 pounds and the other 14 pounds.  A tad bit on the heavy side but not too bad, and having it in two bags made it easier to deal with.  Wore the backpack and carried the satchel on one shoulder with a Tom Bihn Ultimate strap.

Packing list for a 3 day trip to Cambridge in March

I have a few trips to catch up on.  I will add them in mixed with the more current ones.  I am including the dates since they are relevant regarding the weather at the time of year the trip was made.

This is a packing list for a three day trip to the UK.  The trip was in early spring.  Weather was predicted to be fairly warm with a chance of rain.  Rain in the UK?  Seriously.  Well, in any case, I brought a rain jacket (Marmot Precip).  Also, I had some work to do on the trip that made a notebook computer a useful thing to have so I brought my 11 inch MB Air.  Having the computer and knowing the long walks at LHR I decided on a rolling bag, a 19 inch Briggs & Riley BRX.  Here is the packing list.

A picture from last week's trip to San Diego

It was rainy and chilly in San Diego during my visit.  In fact it looks in this picture that a bit of the downtown streets and sidewalks are merging into the harbor.

Packing list for two day trip : JFK - San Diego

I decided to go easy on the carrying so I am going with two bags, one with wheels, rather than one bagging on this trip. Could have done one bag but the fact that I am on a mainline plane, scheduled non-stop and I think maybe a bit sore from carrying too much on my shoulder for last weeks trip invokes the wheels.

Picking list for a 5 day trip to Tokyo

Here is my most recent packing list. This was for a five day trip to Tokyo.  The SF Bags large cargo is my briefcase, shown here.  The BRX refers to my Briggs & Riley BRX 19 inch rolling suitcase.  I sort of wished I hadn't taken the sport coat and the extra pair of tan pants to wear with it. It was a pretty tight fit in the bags. But it did work.

A new bag! Complete with a 3 day packing list

Below is the packing list from my most recent trip. I just received a new bag as a Christmas gift, the Waterfield Designs large cargo bag (from SFBags.com), and it is fantastic. This is my first trip with it. The list below was my departure set up. The large cargo bag is big enough that I could have added one of the packing cubes to it in order to have one bag with a spare set of clothes (in case I had to check a bag). This is the way I am planning for future trips as well.  The trip was to San Diego. Left on Friday afternoon and returned home Monday.

Yet another way to post while traveling

Several devices such as Blackberries have dedicated software for blogging. You can also just email to an address you set up for your blog as well. I'm trying this post using my iPhone's browser and the standard blogger web interface. It seems like the Safari on the iPhone gives you good access to the blogger software.

Blackberries and Blogging

After messing around trying to find a way to do mobile blogging it seems that the simplest way is the most obvious. The combination of the email blogging capabillity of Blogger with the ease and incredible portability of the Blackberry.

The one thing that is missing is the ability to edit. Some of the other solutions such a HBlogger do provide editing ability. There is a bit more overhead involved with that than simply firing an email off to your secret Blogger address.

Since I have both, I mean look at the name of my blog, I will end up using both. I suspect for quick posts it will be hard to beat the Blackberry. While you can save posts with HBlogger of course, it still requires the actual process of hooking up. This is based on my setup which is a Palm T5. With a Treo as hardware HBlogger might be more similar to emailing from the Blackberry in terms of ease of use.

Some more info about transferring files between devices and posting from a mobile phone

Okay, had an interesting series of experiments while in the US Air Club at SFO. I had typed the entry on a Psion 5MX. I then used a program called nconvert to change the Psion word file to three different formats; html, text and rtf. I then used a program called plBeam to transfer all three to my Nokia 6600 cell phone. They appeared as messages on the Nokia. I then tried forwarding the message as a multimedia file or an email. So I forwarded the text message to my Blogger email. Only the multimedia message worked. The email to blogger from the phone came out as gibberish. The rtf file doesnt look like it will work with Blogger either. This entry was typed on the Psion and converted to text, sent to the phone and forwarded as a multimedia message to Blogger. If seems to work fine that way.

I also sent an rtf by email and mms to a MS Exchange address. I will check on how the attachment workedwhen I can get a broadband connection. So far impressed with the combination of devices. It will probably work even better with a real POP address.

Let's get started. Hello everyone

This is my first posting. What will be interesting is how I end up doing the posting. As my handle implies I like gadgets. I also travel a lot. A combination of work, pleasure and frequent flyer miles for the travel. It is one of my hobbies, along with gadgets and photography. Not that they are mutually exclusive of course. Quite the contrary in many cases.

Of course traveling a lot is a relative term. I travelled about 225,000 miles on planes last year. Some people do that much in 6 months. More probably don't do it in 10 years though. The purpose of this blog is to talk about technology from a user standpoint. I'm particularly interested in how technology can be used for travel of course. As such I will probably drift a bit into travel and travel related items that aren't strictly technology More on that as further posts are made. And now to the point of this post.

Im currently on a US Air flight. I left LaGuardia this morning, stopped in Pittsburgh and am now almost to San Francisco. I have about 90 minutes scheduled in San Francsico then off to Charlotte and back to New York later tonight.

So thats all I wll put in this post, a bit of an introduction. The posting of this little exposition is the subject of the experiment. Im trying to get a better idea of what tools I really need to travel with to do a variety of things. Like write and mail a busines letter and make a blog post.Im typing this on a Psion 5MX. My next post will have the results of how I got this post on the web, information about some of the other tests I did and some thoughts on the results.
